Saving fuel saves you money, reduces the amount of CO2 you emit and allows you to travel further before needing to fill up with fuel.

As you drive the application gives you visual and audio feedback on what changes you can make to your driving style to save more fuel.

How much money will it save me?

Our survey of 11 Eco Driving websites shows that, on average, you can improve your MPG by 15% when Eco Driving. Using this figure we can estimate how much an average driver would save in a year:

In the UK: £170

In the US: $205

In Europe: €175

On this basis, for an average driver, this application should pay for itself within 2 weeks.

(Details on exactly how we worked out these figures can be found at http://drivegain.com/savings/calculation/)

How much less CO2 will I emit?

Because you are using less fuel you will be emitting less CO2. On average per year you will save:

UK: 350kg of CO2

US: 660kg of CO2

Europe: 350kg of CO2

Will it work in my car?

The application works with any petrol (gasoline) or diesel car with a standard automatic or manual (stick-shift) transmission.

IMPORTANT: We do not yet support electric or hybrid vehicles.

Will it work on my device?

The iPhone 3G, 3GS and 4 are fully supported.

The iPod Touch is supported if you have a GPS adaptor such as the TomTom Car Kit for iPod Touch (see http://drivegain.com/carkits/)

The application works on the iPad (Wi-Fi + 3G model) – running as an iPhone application.

Audio feedback

The application provides detailed audio feedback on your driving:

• Verbal feedback on what you doing right and areas where you can improve your driving style – for example: “Your cruising speed was good”, “Try reducing your acceleration”

• Verbal feedback and ping to indicate you should be in top gear – “You should now be in 5th gear”

The audio feedback has been carefully designed not to annoy the driver. You can choose between US and UK English voices.

Visual feedback

• Current recommended gear (for manuals)

• Level of acceleration or braking - with the effect this has on fuel consumption

• Your current speed - with the effect this has on fuel consumption

• Your current driving smoothness score

• Average fuel economy reading (in MPG, l/100km etc) – this can be switched to show average cost per distance, average CO2 output, total cost, total CO2, total fuel used, and total distance

• Instantaneous Fuel Use meter (in MPG, l/100km etc) – this can be switched to show cost per distance (e.g. p/mile) or CO2 output (g / km)

Other features

• Fuel prices are kept up to date with updates downloaded from the DriveGain server

• Summary screen showing all averages and totals to date

• Eco Driving tips and hints

• Easy access to iPod controls to allow playing of music while you drive

iPhone holders and car kits

In order to make good use of the application you will need some kind of holder for your iPhone so that it can be positioned in a safe position while you drive.

DriveGain works well!

Despite bad prior reviews I chose to purchase this app. Current version works fine and in my opinion is the best of the Eco Driving apps out there. Kind of eerie how accurate it is on the MPG numbers. The MPG figures don't match my built in meter but I know for my vehicle the outside temp and driving it cold is the cause (2005 Powerstroke 6.0 diesel). Numbers match what I do get during warmer ambiet temperatures, so it's nice to compare. Audio feedback isn't frequent enough to be annoying, just enough to let you know how you're doing without having to look at the screen. Added bonus is great communication with the developer, had a question about updating fuel prices and received a quick response, seems greatly interested in feedback and interaction with the users. This app seems to monitor more variables than most other apps out there, after using for some time you get the feeling that the app is doing more in the background than just sensing motion through the accelerometer or movement throught the GPS. I absolutely believe the app and the great communication is well worth the price of the app. According to it's rating I'm already a smooth driver but actually found out I can accelerate a little faster than my usual snail pace and not affect my fuel usage! This was also confirmed by my built in meter, and probably due to using my turbocharger boost a little more. Try it I think you'll like it!

Great app, a few minor shortcomings

DriveGain is a great application.

#However, perhaps my biggest issue with it is that it does not run in the background. For example, if I switch applications and put another in the front (e.g., my GPS app), DriveGain will stop reporting information. DriveGain WILL work with my GPS, but DriveGain will have to remain in the forefront. This doesn't make much sense, since DriveGain can still be quite helpful with audio only reporting, whereas a GPS may not be as helpful (i.e., one may have to occasionally glance at the map).
#Also, when switching back to the application, one has to select their vehicle again. This can be an annoyance. Maybe if one can set up a default vehicle that always loads, then if they need to switch vehicles within the app, if needed; I think this is a much better approach.
#Smoothness of animations: This a minor point, but one that I think would still help DriveGain. The animations (i.e., of acceleration & braking, smoothness, suggested gears, etc.) are rather choppy. I hope that DriveGain's engine could be improved to make the transitions much more smooth, as the hesitation can be a little distracting.

I'l happily give DriveGain 5 stars if these issues are addressed.
